Epistemological Problems of Perception
نویسنده
چکیده
The central problem in the epistemology of perception is that of explaining how perception could give us knowledge of an external world. Although this is a perfectly intelligible and pressing question in its own right, it is made especially salient by various forms of skepticism, which argue that the senses cannot give us knowledge or even justified belief. Such a conclusion would have far reaching epistemological implications, given how many of our other, non-perceptual, beliefs depend on perception. Skepticism about the external world highlights a number of epistemological difficulties regarding the nature and epistemic role of experience, and the question of how perception might bring us into contact with a mind-independent reality. The issues that arise are of central importance for understanding knowledge and justification more generally, even aside from their connection to skepticism.

متن کاملEpistemological Problems of Artificial Intelligence
In (McCarthy and Hayes 1969), we proposed dividing the artificial intelligence problem into two parts—an epistemological part and a heuristic part. This lecture further explains this division, explains some of the epistemological problems, and presents some new results and approaches. The epistemological part of AI studies what kinds of facts about the world are available to an observer with gi...
متن کاملEmergent Hierarchies in Perception Evolutionary Process, Epistemological process, and Emergent Hierarchies in Perception
Bateson’s difference-based epistemology can be simulated by a Boolean network model. Bateson proposed that taking differences in differences would produce emergent hierarchies of knowledge. Simulating this proposal by taking differences in differences in a Boolean model generates hierarchical categories of perceptual stimuli. The crucial result is that these model-generated categories correspon...

متن کاملPerception as Information: An East-West Dialogue
With the Enlightenment, philosophers in the West recognized that the immediate given of perception is a mental image or representation, not an extra-mental object. That insight raised a pressing, epistemological question: to what degree, if any, do those mental images represent an extra-mental state of affairs? To phrase the question in slightly different terms: in what manner (if any) and to w...
